Title of Assignment: Preliminary Tables
Due Date: March 15/17
Points: 15

The most important step in a quantitative research study is often that of designing the central tables or other data displays (graphs, charts, diagrams, etc.) that will communicate the main results of your data analysis. So in thinking about how to present your research and its results, it is often best to focus initially on the small set of tables, graphs, etc. that show your main findings. Your task is to create the handouts or overheads to accompany your oral presentation of your research to the class at the end of the term. Generally speaking, the data summarized should bear directly upon your most important hypotheses, as developed through your reading and research for the course. But keep in mind that the data themselves must ultimately be used to tell your story, so design and select tables with an eye to what they enable you to say about your topic.

For this assignment, please select and submit the key tables, graphs, or diagrams (up to a maximum of 4) that will form the core of your final presentation. Each of these displays should show the results of a properly conducted analysis of your data. Each should be well designed, properly laid out, clearly labeled, and informatively titled. Do not submit computer printout. In addition to an introductory an concluding paragraph setting out your hypotheses and conclusions, a brief sentence or two should accompany each table (graph, etc.), clearly stating its main point and its contribution to your overall line of argument.

At this stage of your work, accuracy is essential, so be sure to go over every detail of your tables with care. For guidance on possible models of tabular design and other matters, you will again find it helpful to review the literature for research articles related to your work.

Be sure to choose tables that will enable you to tell an interesting story!
