The Politics and Psychology of Terror and Intolerance

Following a brief introduction to the field of political psychology and two weeks focusing on recent politics of terror,

we will spend the remainder of the first term studying the main psychological theories that have been used to explain

terrorist motivation. Throughout the first term students will be required to prepare several brief reaction papers and,

on at least one occasion, to present a very brief oral overview and extension of the previous week's class discussion.

In the second term, we will devote several weeks to the preparation of and participation in a class symposium on

the psychology of terror. Thereafter we will explore the psychology reactions to terror, especially the politics and psychology

of intolerance toward minorities.

Students should keep in mind that, consistent with university policy, our purpose in this course is the advancement of

learning. Achieving this purpose depends upon our maintaining an environment of tolerance and mutual respect.

Please be advised that some of the material discussed in the readings and in class for this course may be disturbing.

How effectively did the presentation extend the discussion of last weeks class? 1-10

**This will be evaluated in part by the instructor and in part by other students in class using an evaluation sheet asking:

Overall, how would you rate the symposium contribution? 1-10

Written assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late papers will be penalized 10% of the mark per day. Students will collect all the written assignments in a slim folder such as a duo-tang. This folder containing all the previous assignments will be submitted and returned with each assignment. Taken together the assignments will represent a student's evolving thinking regarding the psychology and politics of terror and intolerance.
